What We Would Do with NBC’s Olympics Set

Night after night, Olympics viewers are seeing Bob Costas sit in front of the fireplace and interview medalists like Apolo Ohno and Evan Lysecek. And oh, the set needs some character added to it. Even Steven Colbert (above) made fun of the fake fireplace – by climbing into it – after his interview with Costas.
So we took a look at the items we carry and picked out some that we think NBC could use to creater a warmer, cozier feel on its set.

The Breckenridge Leather Grouping, with a matching sofa, club chair, ottoman and recliner (priced for $7,995) would lighten up the set and bring a gold-tone to match the athletes’ medals.

This Laura Megroz downhill skier rug (2-by-3 rug for $80) fits perfectly with competition seen during the Olympics.

Then add some lamps like this skier table lamp ($270) or others that are not as sport-specific with an outdoorsy feel.
Those are some of our ideas. What do you think?

Tip of the Week: Questions to Ask When Buying Wood Furniture

Now that the holidays are over, think about investing in yourself a little bit by buying furniture for your home. Wood armoires, bookshelves, desks, dining tables, kitchen islands and access tables can be vital pieces of your high country style.
So here’s four tips form the American Home Furnishings Alliance to consider when buying wood furniture.
1. Think about your space constraints. You’ll want to buy a piece that fits well into your room but doesn’t have too large or too small of a presence.
2. Ask what kind of wood do you prefer? The choices – hardwood and softwood – make a difference in terms of color, grain and other characteristics.
3. Get info on the construction of the pieces. The association says some pieces are made of thinner boards that are glued to offer stability and reduce warping. That’s one of the ways you will see “solid wood.” When something is described as “engineering wood,” it means it’s made what’s often called particleboard, or slides or pieces of wood that remain after the wood becomes lumber.
4. What’s the finish like? Some are stained and painted. Others have a polish. Others have a weathered look because of lacquer and paint.
